Knut the Polar Bear

Such a sad story.

Knut (German pronunciation: [ˈknuːt] ( listen)) (5 December 2006 – 19 March 2011) was a polar bear who was born in captivity at the Berlin Zoological Garden. Rejected by his mother at birth, he was raised by zookeepers. He was the first polar bear cub to survive past infancy at the Berlin Zoo in more than 30 years. At one time the subject of international controversy, he became a tourist attraction and commercial success.[1] After the German tabloid newspaper Bild ran a quote from an animal rights activist that decried keeping the cub in captivity, fans worldwide rallied in support of his being hand-raised by humans. Children protested outside the zoo, and e-mails and letters expressing sympathy for the cub's life were sent from around the world.[2]
Knut became the center of a mass media phenomenon dubbed "Knutmania" that spanned the globe and spawned toys, media specials, DVDs, and books.[3] Because of this, the cub was largely responsible for a significant increase in revenue, estimated at about five million euros, at the Berlin Zoo in 2007.[4] Zoo attendance figures for the year had increased by an estimated 30 percent, making it the most profitable year in its 163-year history.[5]
Knut died unexpectedly at the age of four on the afternoon of 19 March 2011

I learned about a new website called 1 Kind Design, courtesy of nyloveandvogue.blogspot.com

The interior design and architecture featured on this website is incredible.

Orange Blazer

I look at Rachel Bilson as a style icon. Who else can pull off an orange blazer like she does?!!

Ashley Olsen and Justin Bartha-Split!

Oh no! I loved this couple so, so much! It seems I am a little bit behind on the news, but People.com states the following on March 9, 2011:

Ashley Olsen is a single lady.

The actress-fashion designer, 24, and her Hangover star beau, Justin Bartha, 32, have parted ways, a source confirms to PEOPLE.

The private couple, who dated for more than two years, shot down engagement rumors shortly after they got together in 2008.

Reps had no comment.

I love the Olsen twins, and think they have the greatest style! I grew up watching their movies, and have always admired their overwhelming success.

Persistence

LACK OF PERSISTENCE. Most of us are good "starters" but poor "finishers" of everything we begin. Moreover, people are prone to give up at the first signs of defeat. There is no substitute for PERSISTENCE. The person who makes PERSISTENCE his watch-word, discovers that "Old Man Failure" finally becomes tired, and makes his departure. Failure cannot cope with PERSISTENCE.

Damages

This is one of my favorite shows. Not only is it a show that my boyfriend and I agreed on to watch together, but it is all around entertaining, enthralling and captivating. We could easily watch all 13 episodes of a season in one day. Instead we choose to spread it out over three or four days. Glenn Close is an incredible actress and despite all her misgivings, really makes you want to like her. Newcomer Rose Byrne is also a great actress, but I have to admit that in Season 2, she really bothered me. She was "edgy" and out for revenge, and it did not become her.

I can say this is one of my favorite shows of all time, and recently learned DirecTV picked it up for 3 more seasons!

Quote of the day

“Managing the power of choice, with all its creative and spiritual implications, is the essence of the human experience. All spiritual teachings are directed toward inspiring us to recognize that the power to make choices is the dynamic that converts our spirits into matter, our words into flesh. Choice is the process of creation itself.

The fact that our choices weave our spirits into events is the reason the major spiritual lessons are formed around one essential lesson: Make your choices wisely because each choice you make is a creative act of spiritual power for which you are held responsible.

Further, any choice made from faith has the full power of ~heaven~ behind it – which is why “faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain”. And any choice made from fear is a violation of the energy of faith.”

Gossip Girl

I'll admit it. I am a huge Gossip Girl fan. I forget how I became introduced to it, but this past summer, I watched about five seasons in a few weeks, and now I try to watch one episode per week. My favorite characters are Serena, Dan, Chuck and Blaire. Why? Because they always have the most drama in their lives, AND the best clothes! I also looove Serena's (Blake Lively) hair.

"The Ten"

As in, The Ten Commandments. Last night, we watched "The Ten." This movie contained ten stories, each one inspired by each of the Ten Commandments. Despite movie being full of A list movie stars, including Paul Rudd, Jessica Alba, Winona Ryder, and Liev Schrieber, I don't think many individuals have ever heard of this movie.

On another note...

"Only 68 of 200 Anglican priests polled could name all Ten Commandments, but half said they believed in space aliens."

"Concerning the Ten Commandments in courthouses and legislatures: You cannot post 'Thou Shalt Not Steal,' 'Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery,' and 'Thou Shall Not Lie' in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians...It creates a hostile work environment."

Katherine Heigl's new hair

Not sure how I feel about her hair. Yes, Michelle Williams, Emma Watson and Posh Spice (VB) can easily pull it off. But Katherine? It's not awful, but I saw another picture on people.com today, and it just isn't that attractive. I like her hair best when it is long and blond. I encourage trying new things, but not sure how I feel about this haircut. It doesn't really matter, as we all know she will be wearing extensions within the next few weeks.

What a great person, hero, and woman.

MT Democrats will protect Montanans.

Lots of speakers

State senators and representatives,OPI superintendent, lots others, and then comes the Secretary of State. Wow, can you say loud? My ears are ringing from the SOS's voice. At least she is a woman!
Did u know a majority of Montana's Legislature is women? That's a plus.
I think this will be going past 9 pm. Haven't even gotten to the big ones, and it is 830. Here we go.
Show up and vote! Be an informed voter!

Update 1

Well, MDP Chairman came on the stage to Rihanna's "Run this town." Seems bad ass to me.
Dinner was good-steak, pasta and salad. I'm getting a bit chilled, so needing to wear my jacket, but am getting compliments on my dress! Win!
Up first for speeches is Ed Smith, then Schweitzer, then Baucus, then JT, then Duckworth! Should be a great night!

2011 Mansfield-Metcalf Dinner

For the first time, I am attending the Mansfield-Metcalf Dinner. http://www.montanademocrats.org/

This is a huge dinner where all of the Democratic elected officials for the State of Montana attend, along with members of the public from across the state. Having just moved to Helena, the state capital, I am very excited to be able to attend. I've been wondering what to wear the last few days, and nothing seemed right. So today, I decided to combine exercise with shopping, and run to Macy's to check out their dress selection.

First, I checked out the junior girls section, and found several dresses, but they were all sleeveless, and since it is still winter, I'd have to deal with finding something to cover my arms, as I tend to get cold very easily. I still decided I would try them. Before heading into the dressing room, I did one more loop around the store. And then, I saw the dress. It was hanging on one of those moveable racks, where random items are hanging there, waiting to be put back in their place. I quickly grabbed the dress and ran into the dressing room. It fit! And looked great!! So I immediately bought it, after getting approval from my bff Siobhan.

Check back soon, as I will continue to post updates as the evening continues on!

The King's Speech

Okay fine, I will admit, The King's Speech was really good. It wasn't boring, and I learned something. Geoffrey Rush is an amazing actor, and Colin Firth was incredible as the King. However, I still feel Black Swan should've won Best Picture. Forget what I said about Inception being the best film. Black Swan was definitely the most artistic and creative film of this year.

What will you give up for Lent?

I told my boyfriend I wanted to give up something for Lent. His response?

"If we give something up for lent then we go to church or something. I don't get the give something up without doing something spiritual."

Well, okay.... I don't know if I will go along with the whole "give up something in exchange for doing something spiritual" idea, but I will be giving up something for Lent: Fried food. Again, as my boyfriend said- "Do you even eat fried food?" In all reality, I don't. But there are days when french fries sound so good, and sometimes they are, and sometimes I am let down. If I'm going to order french fries, I expect them to be delicious. Hot, salty, greasy, deliciousness. But lately, the french fries haven't lived up to my expectation.

I never used to eat fries before I moved to Washington, D.C. And now I can't get away from them. So tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, is a good day to start fresh. As in eat, only eat fresh food. As in, no more fries at dinner.

What are you giving up for Lent?

Workout Day 1 plus other thoughts

Ok, so, to get my exercise back into high gear, I did the following today, March 7, 2011.

I walked 6.3 miles around the city of Helena, Montana.

I joined a gym for a month for $60. A little expensive for Montana... I rode the bike there for 30 minutes and lifted weights for my arms, doing both free weights and machines.

Last night I watched Life as We Know It. It's about two people who dislike each other, but are named as guardians for their best friend's baby girl. It was cute, but predictable, of course. When are Katherine Heigl movies not cute and predictable?

Inception

I think Inception got robbed at the Oscars. Why wasn't Leo Dicaprio nominated for Best Actor? Why didn't Inception win Best Picture? Sure, I didn't see King's Speech, but honestly, it looks boring. I am sure Colin Firth did a great job acting in the movie, especially with the stutter, but come on-Inception was incredible!

Thoughts?

To join a gym or not to join a gym

I love working out. Plain and simple. I love the endorphins and the feeling of knowing you did something great for your body. I have been a runner off and on for the last few years, and right now I am in the "off" season in my head. I just can't make myself do it. Last spring I was running about 30 miles a week, in between biking and swimming. Now? Nothing. What happened? I recently joined a gym for a month and I loved it. I love feeling toned and fit. And now? I've lost it all. My membership expired, I moved across the country, I am looking for a job, I don't have a car, and it's winter time. These are all reasons why I haven't been exercising. But are any of them legitimate? No.

Today I'm going to walk five miles, and on the second half of my journey, I am going to stop at the YMCA and join the gym. It is relatively inexpensive, and they have everything I want and need. It is a mile away from where I am living, so by walking there and back, I will already get 2 miles of walking in, plus the actual cardio/weight lifting I will do while I am there. My goal is that by April 1, 2011, I will be well on my way to being the fit/toned person I want to be.

My only problem is-making myself go to the gym. I realized today that since taking the bar exam two weeks ago, I have become extremely lazy. What happened? I went from being a busy, employed law student, to a busy employed law school graduate, to being a person who now doesn't even work out, despite having all the time in the world. I hate it, and I need to make a drastic change TODAY.

So this blog is going to include my daily trials and tribulations of making myself go to the gym and getting back into shape. I have been into working out for the last 7 1/2 years. I'm not about to change now! If I'm not going to run, and it is too snowy/icy to hike, then I will have to use the stationary bike and the elliptical and free weights.

If anyone has suggestions on work outs, please comment! I need all the help I can get to get out of my lazy mindset!

Cancer daily horoscope

Someone at work might call in a debt today by asking you for a favor. Although it's not acceptable to say no, you may feel annoyed if this obligation interferes with your other plans. It's even more complicated if you cannot easily rearrange your schedule. Normally, setting firm boundaries would be a sensible strategy, but this tactic won't work with the current circumstances. You won't be to able fix everything, but it will probably be sufficient to show your concern and follow through the best you can.

Motivational quote for the day

Trust yourself. Think for yourself. Act for yourself. Speak for yourself. Be yourself. Imitation is suicide.
Marva Collins

Hello World!

I’m not really sure what this blog is going to be, but I know it will include my thoughts and ideas, pictures, links, and more. I want to write about things I know, which includes clothes, shoes, hair, celebrities, love, relationships, friendships, the law, and politics.

This might turn out to be a failure, but hopefully not.

Here goes nothing! Wish me luck!
